Title

Dr. Sam Pinn

Description

Sam Pinn, Chairman of the Fort Greene Senior Council and Executive Producer of Jazz 966, currently lives in Bedford-Stuyvesant in the same house in which he was born. He attended Erasmus Hall High School & Morgan State University. He enrolled into the service after graduating from Morgan State and became more involved with jazz in the 1970s, when he became chairman of Brooklyn CORE, which eventually became the sponsor of the Fort Greene Senior Center.

He was introduced to jazz in an old-school way, through a jukebox at the neighborhood luncheonette. He was impressed by some of its tunes – Charlie Parker, George Shearing, and Erroll Garner.

His interest in jazz peaked with trips to The East, and finally opened his own jazz facility on 966 Fulton (Jazz 966), and then moved to Claver Place. He mentions several jazz venues: Tip Top, Baby Grand, Brownies, the Continental, and the Kingston Lounge.
